Free things to do on Oahu (Part 3)
Per Dave’s request, we’re posting up a third part of our (nearly) free things to do on Oahu series. I thought I’ve exhausted every free activity and attraction on this island but I guess after this weekend, there are still a lot that we never touched upon.
So here it goes:
Byodo-In Temple - nestled on the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range and tucked behind Valley of the Temples (a beautiful cemetery, by the way), Byodo-In Temple is another must-visit attraction. Lush foliage and koi ponds add to the beauty of the well-maintained temple grounds. Expect a write-up from us soon. The cost to get in is $2.00 per person and parking is free (although the parking lot can get busy due to visiting tour buses).
Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden - Wow. We went to this botanical garden after visiting Byodo-In Temple and it was definitely a good decision. The garden is anchored by a lake (its main attraction) and is surrounded by beautiful trails dotted with different foliage from around the Pacific Rim. Expect a write-up about this as well. Free admission and parking.
Pali Lookout - How could I have missed this one?! Located on what is known as the Old Pali Highway, Pali Lookout gives you a bird’s eye view of the Windward side of the island. It’s another popular attraction among tourists not only because admission is free, but also because it’s perfect for that one-of-a-kind photo opportunity. Be careful, however: I’ve heard of injury reports due to high winds. Located along Pali Highway about a mile before the first tunnel coming from town.
US Army Museum - Located along Kalia Road in Waikiki, the US Army Museum features the US Army’s special relationship with Hawaii from ancient times all the way to present. Each time period is individually showcased and attempts to give you a first-hand look at the US Army’s history in Hawaii. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged. Parking at nearby parking lots (Fort DeRussy) is validated. For more information, visit the Hawaii Army Museum Society website.
I think that’s it for now. If you have any ideas on free things to do on Oahu (or at least nearly free), feel free to post a comment. I’m sure a lot of our site visitors would appreciate them.
