Free things to do on Oahu (Part 2)

In part 1, Kelly asked if it’s possible to visit hotels and check out their demonstrations and free shows. The answer is definitely yes. Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and Spa always has some sort of mini-event, and on Fridays they usually have their own fireworks display around 7:00PM. Most hotels (especially the ones along the beach) will have some hula shows or live music by the poolside. This usually happens around 5 PM or 6 PM.

After checking out the hotels at night, you might as well take a stroll along Kalakaua Avenue too. When the sun goes down, Kalakaua’s sidewalks become vibrant with music, art and performances.

You can also check out Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage for free performances. For more information about this, visit http://www.alamoanacenter.com/centertainment.htm. Ala Moana Center’s Makai Food Court is also a great place to grab a bite.

The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center also offers free entertainment and lessons ranging from hula shows to lessons in Hawaiian quilting, lei making, hula, and ukulele. For more information, visit http://www.shopwaikiki.com/Html/Entertainment/ a calendar of events in PDF format is also available for download through the same link.

If you don’t mind spending a little bit (a $9.00 admission per adult), the Waikiki Aquarium is also a good place to check out. From their website:

Waikiki Aquarium visitors can see an amazing variety of marine life from the tropical Pacific and Hawaii. Home to over 2,500 animals representing more than 420 species, the Aquarium is especially proud of its reputation of excellence in coral reef exhibitry. When you come to the Aquarium, you can get up-close views of reef sharks, living corals, endangered Hawaiian monk seals, graceful sea jellies, myriads of colorful reef fish, and much, much more.

Duty-Free Shoppers Galleria Waikiki also has a beautiful 65,000-gallon walk-through aquarium. If you’re looking for something bigger, Pacific Beach Hotel’s Oceanarium holds about 280,000 gallons of water and is filled with about 400 varieties of sea life. Both are located along Kalakaua Avenue.

While Waikiki’s famous Brunch on the Beach seems to be in hiatus, the popular Sunset on the Beach is something that you can check out instead. It’s basically an event that features a free movie shown on a big screen right on Waikiki Beach. For more information (and for information about other events in Waikiki), visit http://www.waikikiimprovement.com/eventspage.html.

Aloha Tower Marketplace also has a few events scheduled from time to time. You can also visit the top of Aloha Tower, a popular historic landmark. For information about free events, visit http://www.alohatower.com/specialevents.html.

I would recommend the Navatek as a whale watching boat. I believe they have a lunch and are a little more pricey than a couple others, but I have been a couple times and saw great whale sightings.
