Suggestions on surfing spots

Being a haole from the mainland, I am wondering if you have any suggestions on where I could do some surfing without being pounded by the waves/locals of the North Shore and without being shoulder hopped by the tourists of Waikiki. My skill level is average to above average.

While any local surfer will say that there’s no such thing as an “uncrowded” surfing spot on Oahu, there still are places that will have little to no surfers from time to time. Some of the better ones are located on the other side of Diamond Head (the opposite of the Waikiki Side). Breaks are still good on that side, and while there are times when it can be crowded, it’s not as crowded as some of the other places on the island. You will still encounter locals and the usual tourists (from time to time) no matter what.

Which brings me to another point about etiquette while on the water. Unless you want to have a fist-fight while waiting for a wave (or on the beach), it would be wise to just mind your own business and be courteous when it comes to claiming a wave. Keep in mind that you’re there to surf and have fun.

Also from a friend:

1.  Keep in mind that Diamond Head is a coral break and can still be dangerous to first timers.
2.  White Sands near Barbers’ Point is a Sand break and much more forgiving to those whom are learning.

As far as surf forecasts are concerned, the local radio stations usually announce where the best waves are for the day and throughout the day. It’s best to know how conditions are before you head out, and a little bit of research can go a long way. Luckily, a few surfing sites on the Internet can help you with this. Surf News Network and the Hawaiian Surf Forecast for Oahu are good places to start. Keep in mind that these forecasts and conditions change very quickly.
